In contrast to the slightly unappetising image conjured up in our minds by 'peasant food' the photographic style is proving to be highly appealing.
When we were asked to provide food photography for the Millennium Mayfair hotel we knew it would be a great shoot. The images were to be used for marketing collateral around the hotel and online across their website and social media channels. The charming hotel that boasts over 300 rooms also plays host to contemporary, Italian restaurant and bar, Avista, whose food we were consequently shooting. Avista actually received 3 AA rosettes the day we were there which was great to witness! Their delicious dishes are thoughtfully designed and prepared by head chef Arturo Granato. Arturo was working with us throughout the day and it made a huge difference to the shoot, he was creative and passionate about the way his food was captured and made sure every unique detail was perfect.
We have been using a variety of styles and techniques to photograph food recently and a large proportion of it has possessed a fairly rustic feel. However, Avista offers high-end, sophisticated dining so we knew the shoot required something different, something elegant. Arturo was keen to exhibit some of the food on a glass background as the reflection produces quite a dramatic effect. Agreeing that this could be the way forward we turned up with a variety of backgrounds and a sheet of glass that would provide the effect we were after. In order to maintain some consistency we used the glass throughout the shoot. The effect varied from dish to dish and really added value to the shots, especially the fish in a bright yellow sauce. Black on black can work very well when done right but plates can also become lost in the background–the reflection provides shape and character to a shot that otherwise may not have worked.
Overall we were very pleased with the food photography we produced on this shoot and very much look forward to working with the team at Millennium, the team at Avista and Arturo again soon. Here are a few shots from the final set:
We've been producing images for one of our long standing clients, Maroush, for a long time now. We've grown to know them as a business and have developed our photographic style to meet their needs. Over the last few months Maroush have had their website fully redesigned, this meant they needed new and exciting images to bring the site to life. After many discussions with the chefs and the marketing team at Maroush we suggested they went in a slightly different direction to what they originally had in mind. We knew it was important to find a style that would dramatically enhance the new site without eliminating the sense of authentic Lebanese culture. So we were keen to step away from clean white backgrounds and find something a little more unique. We researched into the style we had in mind and found a selection of examples to present to Maroush; they immediately understood where we were coming from.
Previous shoots for the group have had quite a traditional feel to them and have always used the restaurant as a backdrop. This time we felt it was key to do something innovative and new that would reinvent Maroush in their customers eyes as a modern, yet authentically Lebanese, London restaurant. To achieve our goal we acquired colourful, rustic backgrounds and collected a variety of interesting props. The shoot took place in Maroush Gardens where all the food was freshly prepared on the day. This meant everything we shot was exactly as you'd receive it if you dined at one of the Maroush restaurants. The idea behind this is that once diners realise they can trust the quality of the food to be exactly what they expected they soon become loyal customers.
Due to the effort that went in to the preparation, from everyone involved in the shoot, we were able to produce a large number of high quality images in the time available. Each shot was individually styled and lit so they successfully showed off the unique dishes in their best light. We felt it was important to produce a set of images that could be used as 'stand alone' images or as a set. This provides the restaurant group with a selection of images they can use in web galleries, on marketing material and as social media content. We had fantastic feedback from Maroush and have photographed with them again since!

Subtle movement in an image draws the eye into the frame and attracts customers attention for that much longer.
Professional photography for hotel marketing is a worthwhile investment. The images need to tell a story, the right story, and it needs to be told to the right people.
As professional photographers we know it can be tempting to call the first person you can think of that owns a decent camera and ask them to take a few quick snaps of your finished product. It will save time and money, won't it?
